Overview

The AquaIllumination Hydra Edge 44HD is a compact LED reef light that combines the wide, even spread reefers have traditionally chased with T5s or panel lighting and the shimmer and punch that make LEDs appealing. Its EdgeField™ optics push light out across a 100-degree spread for smoother PAR and better colour mixing. The result is fewer hot spots, fewer shadowed caves, and less of the "disco" colour banding you can get from older point-source fixtures.

In the centre sits the new Solar Ring, a dedicated cluster of white and warm white LEDs that you can dial up or down to control shimmer and caustics independently. One Edge 44HD covers roughly a 75 x 75 cm footprint when mounted around 23 cm above the water. That makes it a strong single-fixture option for many nano and mid-size reefs, and a building block for larger tanks.

Key features
  • EdgeField™ optics: adapted from AI's Blade series, these give a 100° spread for even light distribution, seamless colour blending and minimal shadowing around complex aquascapes.
  • Solar Ring shimmer control: centrally positioned white and warm white LEDs let you tune the rippling sunlight effect to taste, rather than having it fixed by the fixture design.
  • Solar Blue spectrum: set all channels to the same intensity and you get AI's Solar Blue look, designed to approximate shallow-reef light. From there you have full control over the blue-to-white balance.
  • 44-LED, multi-channel array: blue, royal blue, violet, UV, cool white and warm white diodes give you plenty of room to bring out coral fluorescence or run a more natural daylight look.
  • HyperDrive: reallocates unused power from one channel to another, so custom spectrums don't leave wattage sitting idle.
  • Dedicated moonlight channel: a warm, low-level night light for lunar simulation and for watching nocturnal activity on your reef.
  • 24-hour programming and app control: schedule sunrise, sunset and everything in between through the free AI Mobius app. The Edge also integrates with the MyAI and Neptune Apex Fusion ecosystems.
  • Quiet, slim design: a low-profile housing with a custom heat sink and quiet fan keeps the light discreet over the tank and easy on the ears in a living room.
What's in the box
  • AI Hydra Edge 44HD LED fixture
  • Power adapter

Please note that a mounting solution is not included. AI's Hydra Edge mounting kit (with top and back-mount brackets) and hanging kit are sold separately, so make sure you pick up the one that suits your tank.

Who it's for

The Edge 44HD suits reef keepers who want broad, even coverage from a single, tidy fixture. It is a natural fit for cube-style and nano-to-mid-size tanks, and can be run in multiples over longer displays.

  • Softies and LPS: you can stretch coverage further, out towards roughly 90 cm across.
  • Mixed reefs: plan on around 75 cm of coverage per fixture.
  • SPS-dominant tanks: tighten the footprint to around 60 cm per fixture, or add a second unit, so light-hungry colonies get the intensity they need at depth.

It also suits anyone upgrading from an older point-source LED who's tired of shadowing and colour banding but doesn't want to give up shimmer.

Setup & tips
  • Start low and ramp up: if you're switching from another light, begin at reduced intensity and increase gradually over a few weeks. Different fixtures at the same percentage are not equal, and corals need time to adjust.
  • Measure rather than guess: if you can borrow or hire a PAR meter, map your tank after install and adjust your mounting height or intensity to suit where your corals actually sit.
  • Use the Solar Ring deliberately: push it up during the midday peak for maximum shimmer, and ease it back at the edges of the photoperiod for a more natural sunrise and sunset.
  • Plan your mount before it arrives: decide between a tank-mount bracket and a hanging kit early, and keep the power adapter somewhere dry and well away from splash zones.
