Overview
The DOS Headcap is the wear part of your Neptune Systems DŌS — a complete, factory replacement fluid metering head that swaps out the cover, peristaltic tubing, barbed fittings and roller wheel in one go. It's a genuine Neptune part, so there's no guesswork about tube ID, roller geometry or how it seats.
Peristaltic tubing doesn't last forever. As it ages it loses its rebound, which means the head draws slightly less each rotation and your calibration quietly drifts — the classic "my alk is sliding and I can't work out why" scenario. Worn tubing also adds drag on the motor. Fitting a fresh headcap restores the pump to as-new metering accuracy in about a minute, with no tools.
Key features
- Complete assembly, not just a lid — cover, peri-tube, fittings and roller wheel all included and pre-assembled.
- Genuine Neptune Systems part — correct tube bore and roller spacing, so your DŌS meters to spec rather than to an approximation.
- Tool-free swap — squeeze the sides of the old head until the clips release, lift it off, click the new one into place.
- Restores dosing accuracy — fresh, self-lubricating tubing brings the head back to its original volume-per-revolution.
- Reduces motor load — aged, stiffened tubing creates unnecessary resistance on the drive; new tubing takes that strain off.
- Fits DŌS and DŌS QuietDrive — the same head design across both generations.
What's in the box
- 1 x DŌS replacement pump head assembly (cover, peristaltic tube, fittings and roller wheel)
Note: a DŌS has two independent pump heads. If you're servicing both at the same interval, you'll want two.
Who it's for
Anyone running a Neptune DŌS or DŌS QuietDrive — this is a consumable, not an upgrade. It's due whenever the head has racked up meaningful run time, and Neptune's guidance is around 700 hours of pump run time as a replacement point.
How fast you get there depends on your load. A heavily stocked SPS system dosing three parts around the clock will chew through hours far quicker than a modest mixed reef topping up a single supplement, or a DŌS running occasional automatic water changes. If your dosing is doing the heavy lifting on your alkalinity stability, keeping a spare headcap on the shelf is cheap insurance against a mid-week failure.
Setup & tips
- Recalibrate after fitting. Run the DŌS calibration routine on the new head before you resume dosing — new tubing meters differently to the tired tubing you just pulled off, and skipping this step is how people overshoot.
- Track your hours. Apex logs pump run time, so use it rather than guessing from the calendar. Two DŌS units doing different jobs will wear at completely different rates.
- Flush before you swap. If you've been running calcium or alkalinity solutions, purge the lines with RO water first — dried precipitate in the fittings makes reassembly messier than it needs to be.
- Watch for early warning signs. Creeping parameters despite an unchanged schedule, visible flattening of the tube, or a head that's become noticeably noisier are all cues to replace sooner than the hour count suggests.
