Overview
The Vectra L2 is EcoTech Marine's mid-large DC centrifugal pump, built to move serious water quietly and efficiently while giving you proper control over how much of it actually gets to the display. Where a traditional AC return pump is throttled with a gate or ball valve — burning electricity to fight itself — the L2 simply runs at the speed you dial in, so you're only paying for the flow you want.
This is the second-generation Vectra: same performance, but with revised input and output couplers, a new base, a tougher motor sleeve, better thermal management and more ergonomic collars. It's a return pump you set up once, tune from the couch, and then largely forget about — which is exactly what the heart of a reef system should be.
Key features
- Genuine DC control — 11,500 lph at full noise, with 6.5 m of head pressure to work with, adjustable down to whatever your overflow and sump actually want.
- Mobius app included — wireless is built in, and the free Mobius app (iOS and Android) handles scheduling, mode changes, firmware updates and status at a glance.
- Auto-calibration — the pump can calibrate itself to your tank, which prevents back-siphoning when you turn it down and gives you a neutral flow condition in Feed Mode.
- Feed Mode and Speed Lock — pause flow at the touch of a button while you feed, and lock the dial so a curious visitor (or your own elbow) can't change your settings.
- Closed-loop modes — Lagoonal Random, Reef Crest Random and Gyre are all on board if you're running the L2 on a closed loop rather than as a return.
- QuickCouple fittings and a rotating volute — the outlet can be spun to suit your plumbing, and the couplers make pulling the pump for a clean a two-minute job.
- British Standard Pipe threading — sensible for Australian plumbing, and the couplers are designed around standard PVC.
- Battery Backup compatible — the EcoTech Battery Backup accessory keeps flow alive through an outage. Note: for return pump duty you'll also want the Vectra Battery Backup Booster.
- ReefLink and EcoSmart compatible — if you're already in the EcoSmart ecosystem, the L2 slots straight in alongside VorTech pumps and Radion lighting.

Who it's for
The L2 sits in the sweet spot for medium-to-large reef systems — think a decent display with a sump underneath, or a system where the return also has to feed a manifold running a reactor, a UV or a chiller. With 6.5 m of head available, it'll happily push up through a two-storey plumbing run or a tall stand without gasping.
It's also a sound choice if you're deliberately buying "too much" pump. Because it's DC and infinitely adjustable, you can run it well below maximum on a smaller system today and still have headroom when you upgrade — without the wasted power of a choked AC pump. Reef keepers running SPS-heavy tanks also use the L2 on a closed loop, where the Reef Crest and Gyre modes come into their own.
Setup & tips
- Run the auto-calibration once your plumbing is finished. It's what makes Feed Mode behave properly and it's your insurance against back-siphoning when the pump is dialled down.
- Match your plumbing to the fittings, not the other way around. The intake is 38 mm and the outlet is 31.75 mm — keep the suction side generous and avoid unnecessary elbows, as restriction there costs you more than anything downstream.
- Rotate the volute before you glue anything. Dry-fit the whole run first; the ability to spin the outlet often saves you two fittings and a headache.
- Turn Speed Lock on once you're dialled in. Find your ideal turnover, lock it, and your overflow will thank you — most "my sump overflowed" stories start with someone nudging a dial.
- Consider the Battery Backup seriously. Flow is the first thing a reef loses in an outage and the first thing it needs back. If you go this route for return duty, budget for the Booster as well.
